@gmc It's good to know how to use the compressor for audio ducking—thanks. I don't quite understand how it works, but I can say that shared effects refer to individual effects that are repeated exactly as they're set on the main track. Shared tracks, on the other hand, are somewhat similar to “bouncing tracks” in audio editing. You import an external track—complete with various effects and keyframes—and use it as the source for effects in your main track. It’s a bit like the sidechain input on an audio mixer. So it involves various effects and other settings (but not the external audio track itself with its audio content).

@andreapaz @phylsmith2004 I think I managed to get what I want, sort of, with the native compressor plugin.

I copied the voice-over tracks and muted the copies. These are my control tracks. Then I added compressors to each of L and R channels of the background music, and linked those to their respective control tracks as 'Shared tracks'. I had hoped to be able to control both background music tracks by the same controlling track, but I haven't figured out how to do that. The whole concept of shared effects and shared channels still feels like magic to me, I do not understand what it does.

When I use the unmuted original voice-over tracks to control the compressor, the voice-over will be attenuated as well, which is not what I wanted.

In the compressor settings for each, I had to set 'trigger' to 1, which seems to mean 'use the shared channel that's linked to the compressor as the controlling channel'. I then set the curves for the compressor setpoints so that it sounded right. I had to move the output level for input level -78 way up though, otherwise it would be completely silent when there was no input.

Don't ask me how or why this works, but it does what I wanted. Mostly. In the preview, there's a blip where the compressor gain goes all the way down. It might be related to a cut in the audio there, not sure. I hope it goes away in the final rendering. One can hope 🙂

Have you tried the Ladspa plugins, L_SC2 or L_SC3? I am not fluent in using either one, just saw the info on each containing the word "sidechain". Unfortunately the ffmpeg plugin, sidechaincompress which does audio ducking, has been commented out in CinGG due to input/output error. In addition, there may be LV2 plugins that you can incorporate into CinGG that provide sidechain compression. Maybe someone else will know how to do this and respond.
