As a Google hater (don't use Google search engine, have a de-Googled smartphone etc.), I find having to allow Google access to my computer to log in here damned annoying, which is why I haven't been logging in much recently. I can allow temporary access to log in, then disallow access, but after a few days I find I am no longer logged in and need to allow access again to log back in. So I don't.
Having just changed my distro, the first time in eight years, to one in which Firefox does not recognise the .mozilla folder from the old distro, I have needed to log into several sites, so included this one with the intention of having my say.
I appreciate this system has stopped the odd lengthy spam posts we used to get, but is there a way to modify this behaviour and let users stay logged in until we choose? I do allow Cin-GG cookies in case you were wondering.
@Andrew_R
Never considered this consequence before. Google has gotten a little "too big" but I remember the time when we were using Yahoo to do searches and it was slow and full of ads and we were ecstatic when Google came along for its simplicity and speed. But now you do a search and you get millions of results and not just what you specifically requested.
However, the most important BENEFIT since the forum change has been that users can now actually see the latest additions in a timely manner. Before, often the new item would not be viewable for 1-3 days -- some users could, but others could not. This led to discussions that made no sense to those who could not view the 1 item but could possibly see a followup item (i.e. what are they talking about?)
I will see if I can find a specific solution that works for non-Goggle users.
My browser does clear site data when it's closed, but this site is on the exceptions list the same as it has been for years without this happening.
My selective firewall is set to allow what the site normally needs to work but all the Google stuff is blocked, the same as all my regular sites, for any new sites I have to temporarily allow the necessary items for them to work. When I try to log in here I get a big sign telling me I have not completed the captcha which, incidentally, I don't even see until I unblock Google to allow it. Once logged in I block Google again and stay logged in until...............suddenly I am not some days later.
So far I have automatically stayed logged in for 7 days. From searching online, it may be that WordPress forum has a default of 14 days but there is a way to extend that -- I will check in another 7 days but not sure if I will be able to change the default without making a mistake anyway.
As have I, so OK so far!
It seems to me that once past the hated captcha and Cin-GG cookies have been allowed on my computer, the site knows who I am when I visit and there shoulld be no further log-in kerfuffle.
Whatever the outcome, thankyou for taking the trouble to try to sort it out Phyllis.
It seems ironic somehow to have to run the gauntlet of the captcha again to inform you that I was logged out after 10 days! 😡
I will not log in again after this unless absolutely desperate.
Sorry to say, but I am still logged in here since 8/12 which would be 12 days so far but will see whether or not I get past 14. I use Fedora as my O/S and Firefox as my browser. I will start a test on Ubuntu and Debian later.
I changed from Manjaro KDE to MX Linux Xfce, I'm still using Firefox browser with the same add-ons, but that is not the problem as it started happening before I changed distros.
@DeJay
I am testing the following now to see how many days I will stay logged in:
There is a “Remember” checkbox on the login page and "supposedly" the only time you should have to login to the Forum site again is if you clear your browser’s history/cookies. But if your browser is configured to clear its history when it’s closed, that could be clearing your login name and password.
Possibly a reset or reboot on CinGG server clears the logins though.
